All about Bramble & Bombus

...and suddenly you just know it's time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginnings...

Realising my dream...

My name is Katherine, and I live with my family on a hillside farm, in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.  Having taught for ten years, in 2022, I decided that I needed a change and wanted to make a slightly different impact on the world.  I have always loved the great outdoors, gardening and the creative arts, so in September 2022, I decided to take a giant leap of faith and left my teaching career behind to pursue a wild dream to become a Flower Farmer.  With nothing but a notepad full of ideas and a head full of dreams, I told my family my plans, and just like that, Bramble & Bombus Flower Farm was established.

In the beginning...

I put my faith in the future into eight statements, my aims were -

  • To be a flower farmer
  • To grow my own flowers
  • To create my own bouquets
  • To grow British flowers
  • Grown not flown
  • Fresh farm grown
  • Feed the bees
  • Happiness

Planting our future...

So with seeds, soil blocks, and plenty of enthusiasm, seeds were sown in the greenhouse with love, care, and the hope that I was simply planting my future. Work also began on the flower farm, creating planting beds, compost heaps, growing frames, repairing walls, and adding new gateways.  The whole family invested in the project and through wind, rain, hail, sunshine, and snow, we all worked to get the flower farm ready for its first season.

Progress...

Thankfully, seedlings grew into wonderful plants and before we knew it, we had rows and rows of fabulous seasonal British flowers growing on the Gilwern hillside.  The air was filled with the buzz of crickets and bumblebees and wherever we looked, a pollinator was taking our lovingly provided nectar and pollen from our flowers.  The flower Farm is named after a vital pollinator - Bombus is Latin for bumblebee.

Today's Farm...

The flower farm is now in its first season. It has begun to provide flowers for people within the local community and we are loving the community spirit that comes with it.  Every day is a learning day and with that comes increasing knowledge and experience.  We presently provide bouquets, wreaths, jar posies, flower wands, and crowns, however, we have so many more ideas up our sleeves!

The Future...

Our first season is definitely teaching us a tremendous amount already, and we are extremely excited to see where Bramble & Bombus Flower Farm takes us.

We are hoping to open the flower farm up in the future and host pick-your-own bloom events, host workshops, and so much more...
